FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is taking the gaming world by storm. It is a hardcore
role-playing game, from the creator of the Dark Souls series, that certainly isn’t
for the faint of heart. It is a gorgeous yet brutal game that rewards strategy and
patience. The massive world is full of gear and weapons which requires both skill
and time to acquire. It is a time sink worthy of every second. It doesn’t take long
to accumulate an inventory full of items you don’t want or need. What if you
could sell the dozens of weapons and armor you aren’t interested in wielding?
What if you could earn while enjoying a game such as Elden Ring? Blockchain
aims to bring just that to the future of gaming.
Wading into the fray of this new evolution in gaming is Equilibrium Games ($EQ),
a project on the XRPL blockchain. EQ’s flagship games World of Equilibrium and
Blight’s Wrath are heavily influenced by Dark Souls and by extension, Elden
Ring. World of Equilibrium is described as a hardcore MMO (Massive Multiplayer
Online) game with a prestige function. Blight’s Wrath is their single player
version with NFT integration.
Equilibrium first began trading in August of 2021. As the first gaming token
launched on the XRPL they’ve wasted no time blazing their trail across the
space. They went from a newly launched gaming token ($EQ), to building their
own ecosystem in just 10 months. The $EQ token is designed to be their gaming
ecosystem’s native currency.
The man at the helm of Equilibrium Games, CEO Daniel, was kind enough to
take time out of his busy schedule to discuss the project with me.
Sparked amidst the height of the Covid shutdowns, Equilibrium Games is the
product of CEO Daniel and his wife. Daniel met his wife while working as a
manager for Pfizer in Germany. After relocating to her hometown in Mexico,
Daniel took a job working remotely for an American company based in Orlando.
As a seasoned crypto investor, Daniel and his wife decided to be independent
and start their own project when XRP hit $2.
“I’ve [always been] a gamer and with the decline [in] the quality of many games, I
decided to learn to create games. First as a hobby, and then as time [went on] I
made it my job.”
Daniel credits his and EQ’s influences from games like Diablo 2, Baldur’s Gate,
World of Warcraft, CS, and Warcraft III (custom maps). EQ and their game World
of Equilibrium was inspired by the movie Equilibrium starring Christian Bale. “…
our story for our first game World of Equilibrium…is about bring[ing] peace/
balance (Equilibrium) back to the world…Fun fact our symbol, even though often
mistaken as a Omega symbol, is a Libra symbol (scale) which we [chose] in
accordance with our name.”
Currently Equilibrium has six partners and eight games in development with
plans to expand even further. The entire $EQ network will run on a play to earn
model with their own NFT marketplace for in-game items. If all that wasn’t
enough, they are also preparing their own grant for indie developers to join the
When asked about upcoming launches, Daniel explained they have one game in
closed alpha and one in beta testing. In regards to their own game, Blights
Wrath, which is a Dark Souls inspired game with some aspects of Diablo 2 and
Warcraft 3, they expect to start their own alpha testing around October of this
year. The alpha will be a closed test for friends and active community members
only. The beta however, will have a signup through the Equilibrium Games
website(equilibrium-games.com). The button is currently disabled, but will be
functional when their new site launches.
The tokenomics behind Equilibrium Games is a straightforward 100 million token
total supply with 80% of that supply having been airdropped to the community.
The 20% held by EQ will be used to pay out rewards across their entire
ecosystem of games. It is worth noting that as of the date of this article The
Reaper has burned a total of 14,352 EQ tokens further reducing the circulating
“When we created EQ we wanted it to be a community token, we are not big fans
of cryptocurrencies where the owners retain large amounts as this can affect the
ecosystem. So over the last 9 months we have been distributing EQ and 80% is
now in the hands of the community, while we hold 20% for play and earn rewards
for our games and our partners.” This model allows there to be a player driven
economy and rewards earned in the games. When that 20% runs out there will
be an invisible tax system built into the games’ marketplace which will raise funds
to replenish the reward pool.
“I believe we will see more use case adoptions for cryptocurrencies. Many
countries are now actively looking into what Blockchain can provide them and
with legalization it opens the door for companies like us to build on it. For
example, in Mexico, there is a proposal right now to make cryptocurrencies legal
tender which would allow us to use EQ as a currency.”
While the gaming community in Mexico is relatively small they are dedicated and
with this push to adapt, Daniel believes that in time, the cryptocurrency industry
in Mexico will only progress and grow. “For Equilibrium Games in 5 years I would
like to be the main center for gaming with Blockchain adoption.”
If you have ever spent dozens, or more likely hundreds, of hours in the
expansive, beautiful worlds of video games, you know all too well the enjoyment
that is derived from such experiences. You also know that the time and money
spent in that game is gone forever. With the right game it is a worthy trade, but
why settle for such a one-sided exchange? With gaming on the blockchain you
can earn back the costs you incurred, maybe even earn a genuine income simply
by playing the games you love. Equilibrium Games and their ecosystem of play
to earn games are setting the stage for a massive shift in the future of gaming.
This project spotlight is brought to you by The Reaper Financial. The Reaper
prowls the XRPL, burning millions of tokens out of existence. Just as the Grim
Reaper is selective of those he takes to the afterlife, so too is The Reaper when
Reaping projects. The XRPL is scoured, weighed, and measured. Only the best
projects are selected and eligible for Reaping. Each project is graded and must
meet the standards set by the Founders. In this series we will explore projects
that have made the cut, are eligible, and have had some of their supplies
removed from their earthly existence. In the blockchain as with all things, death
brings value to life.
